Genealogy of Lord Ram
On the banks of the Sarayu River lies a small city known by various names such as Ayodhya, Avadhapuri, and Ram Nagari. It is believed that Ayodhya was founded by King Ikshvaku, a valiant ruler of the Kosala region, whose ancestors are traced back to Vaivasvat Manu.
It is said that Vaivasvat Manu’s second son, King Ikshvaku, was the ancestor of Lord Rama. From here, the lineage extended to the Suryavansha. Let’s delve into the detailed genealogy of Shri Ramalala:
- Born to Brahma, Marichi became the father of Kashyapa.
- Kashyapa’s son was Vivasvan, marking the beginning of the Suryavansha.
- Vivasvan’s son was Vaivasvat Manu.
- Vaivasvat Manu had ten sons, including Il, Ikshvaku, Kushanabha, Arishtanemi, Dhrishta, Narishyanta, Karusha, Mahabali, Sharyati, and Prishadhra.
- It is believed that in the lineage of Vaivasvat Manu’s second son, Ikshvaku, Lord Rama was born.
- Ikshvaku’s descendants included Vikukshi, Nimi, and Dandaka.
- In the next generation, kings like Harishchandra, Rohit, Vrish, Bahu, and Sagara were born.
- Continuing the lineage, Vikukshi’s descendants included Ban, and Ban’s son was Anaranya.
- Anaranya’s son was Prithu, and from Prithu, Trishanku was born.
- Trishanku’s son was Dhundhumar, whose descendants included Yuvanashva.
- Yuvanashva’s son was Mandhata, and from Mandhata, Susandhi was born.
- Susandhi had two sons, Dhruvasandhi and Prasenajit.
- Dhruvasandhi’s son was Bharata Kumar, and from him, Asita was born.
- Asita’s son was Sagara, who became a renowned king of the Suryavansha.
- From Sagara, Asamanja was born, and Asamanja’s son was Amshuman.
- Amshuman’s son was Dilipa, and from Dilipa, Bhagirath was born.
- Bhagirath’s son was Kakutstha, and from Kakutstha, Raghu was born.
- Raghu, a valorous king, gave rise to the name Raghu Vamsha for the Suryavansha.
- Raghu’s son was Pravriddha, and the lineage continued with various kings.
- Eventually, the lineage led to the birth of Nahusha, and from Nahusha, Aj was born.
- Aja’s son was Dasharath, who became the father of Lord Rama along with his three other sons: Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna.
In this way, Lord Rama is considered the descendant of Brahma and is acknowledged as the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu in Hindu religious beliefs.
