Swami Vivekananda: When Swami Vivekananda questioned whether a “divya purush” could eat fish, an ISKCON monk named Amogh Lila Das made fun of him. The video gained popularity, just like many other Das videos. The ISKCON suspended him for a month after taking note of the comments stated in the video. According to the ISKCON, Das will now travel to the Govardhan hills for atonement for this month.
Challenging the Actions and Beliefs of Swami Vivekananda
In a viral video Das said that, “koi bhi divya purush kisi janwar ko maar ke khayega? (Would a divine person kill an animal and eat it?) Will he eat fish? Fish too feel pain. And if Vivekananda ate fish, then the question is if a divine person can eat fish. A divine human being has kindness in his heart…can he say brinjal is better than Tulasi because brinjal satiates our hunger. Or, can he say playing football is more important than studying Gita? This is not right. But I must say I have the utmost respect for Swami Vivekananda. Had he been here, I would have prostrated in front of him. But we should not believe blindly in everything he says.”
ISKCON Condemns Amogh Lila Das’s Remarks as Lacking Understanding and Respect
ISKCON claimed that Amogh Lila Das’s remarks showed a lack of understanding of the “diversity of spiritual paths and personal choices” in addition to being rude. According to the ISKON statement, “We would like to emphasise that the views expressed by Shri Amogh Lila Das are not representative of the values and teachings of ISKCON. Our organisation has always promoted harmony, respect and understanding towards all spiritual paths and traditions, and we condemn any form of disrespect or intolerance towards other religious beliefs and practices.” Amogh Lila Das is a well-known motivational speaker on social media. The 43-year-old is currently serving as vice president of ISKCON Dwarka’s Dwaeka chapter. His real name is Ashish Arora, according to reports. He was an engineer before deciding to become a monk.
