National Dengue Day 2024: As we observe National Dengue Day in 2024, it is critical that we empower ourselves with information to battle the virus carried by mosquitos. Given that dengue is a severe problem in many areas, we must be aware of it and take care to limit its effects. Let’s look at the symptoms, warning signs, and possible defences against dengue.
Dengue Signs and Symptoms
After a bite, dengue symptoms may appear 4 to 10 days later. The following are signs and symptoms to look out for:
- High Fever: Dengue fever frequently starts off mildly and quickly gets worse. Temperatures above 100.4 F should be taken seriously, any bruises on the skin and any possible blood in the faeces or urine.
- Body Pain: Dengue infections can cause excruciating joint and muscle pain that feels like smashed bones. It becomes difficult to move, upsetting everyday schedules.
- Abdominal Pain: Sharp cramps or aches in the abdomen might be a symptom of dengue. Early detection requires prompt medical consultation.
- Bleeding: Unusual bleeding symptoms include nosebleeds, gum bleeding, and reddish patches on the skin that resemble bruises. Getting medical help right away is essential to avoid problems.
- Repeated Headaches: In order to rule out dengue or other underlying diseases, persistent headaches should prompt a visit to doctor.
- Ocular Pain: Severe pain behind the eyes is a sign of ocular inflammation, which calls for immediate medical attention to relieve discomfort and avoid consequences.
- Swollen Lymph Nodes: Patients with dengue frequently experience enlarged lymph nodes, which are not to be ignored.
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea: These symptoms should be immediately reported to healthcare practitioners when they are combined with other warning indicators.
Effective Preventive Measures to Tackle Dengue
- Remove Static Water Sources: To lessen mosquito habitat, pools, flower pots and abandoned containers should all be routinely emptied and cleaned.
- Use Window and Door Screens: To keep mosquitoes out of residential areas, install screens on windows and doors. Fix any damage to guarantee the best possible defence.
- Use insect repellent: Especially while engaging in outdoor activities, apply repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin and clothes.
- Put on Protective Clothes: Use long sleeve shirts, long trousers, socks and closed-toe shoes to cover exposed skin. Since bright colours tend to attract mosquitoes, use light-colored clothes.
- Use Mosquito Nets: When travelling to dengue-endemic areas or staying in areas with high mosquito activity, sleep underneath nets.
- Maintain Ventilation in Indoor Spaces: Having well-ventilated interior spaces keeps mosquitoes away from residential places.
- Outside Time Activities Reduce your time outside in the morning and late afternoon, when mosquito activity is at its highest.
We can better prepare ourselves to fight this infectious disease by being aware of the warning signs, symptoms, and preventative actions for dengue.
