National Parents Day 2024: Today, as we commemorate National Parents’ Day 2024, presents the ideal time to consider how parents feel about formal education and the skills their children will require in the future. This day celebrates the commitment parents make to their kids’ development and draws attention to the changing views on education. An extensive examination of these evolving perspectives is given by a recent BrightCHAMPS poll that received responses from over 500 parents across 27 nations. The results are noteworthy because they closely correspond with the goals of the Skill India project and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in India, both of which centre on more efficient teaching and learning techniques.
Traditional Education No Longer Seen as Sufficient
A noteworthy discovery from the BrightCHAMPS study is that 41% of parents worldwide feel that their children’s future can no longer be secured by following the conventional path of attending school, college, or university, and earning a degree. This indicates a change in the importance that parents place on traditional schooling in preparing their kids for the complicated world of today. This idea is supported by the NEP 2020, which calls for a more adaptable and diverse approach to education that equips students for challenges they may face in the real world.
The Growing Importance of Practical Skills
The survey also reveals that 65% of parents globally think that skill-building for practical knowledge needs to supplement academic learning for their children to be successful in life. This consensus highlights the need for a holistic approach to education, similar to the goals of the NEP 2020 and Skill India. These initiatives emphasize the integration of vocational education and skill development into the academic curriculum, ensuring students are well-rounded and prepared for diverse career paths.
Robotics and AI/ML as Essential Life Skills
When it comes to specific skills, 33% of parents globally believe that Robotics and AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) are the most important life skills their children will need in the next decade. This underscores the increasing awareness of the importance of technological skills in the future job market. The NEP 2020 promotes the inclusion of contemporary subjects such as AI and coding, aligning with parents’ views on the necessity of these skills.
Concerns Over Financial Security
For parents, financial stability is still a major concern. The survey indicates that 46% of parents worldwide are concerned about the financial stability of their kids and the worth of pricey degrees in the changing job market. This issue is similar to the NEP 2020’s emphasis on lowering the cost of education and improving its employability by guaranteeing that students acquire the skills necessary for both job advancement and financial security.
A Call for a Balanced Educational Approach
The BrightCHAMPS report emphasises the necessity of a well-rounded educational strategy that combines conventional academic instruction with real-world skill development. Like the goals of NEP 2020 and Skill India, which seek to close the skills gap between school and employment by equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical abilities, parents are advocating for educational systems to change and adapt.
