National Thesaurus Day 2024 Honours Peter Mark Roget’s Legacy, Unraveling the Rich History

National Thesaurus Day 2024

National Thesaurus Day 2024: The 18th of January is National Thesaurus Day, a celebration honouring the 1779 birthday of Roget’s Thesaurus author Peter Mark Roget. After a prosperous medical career, Roget retired in 1840 and devoted the remainder of his life to compiling Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases.

Roget’s Lexical Odyssey

Decades of gathering and classifying word lists—much like a biologist gathering specimens—were put into this endeavour. In Roget’s instance, he gathered vocabulary. His thesaurus was initially published in 1852. Furthermore, it was a comprehensive classification and arrangement of every word according to its meaning rather than just a book of synonyms.

Since then, thesaurus has been a useful tool for poets and authors to add life to their writing. Still, there are many who disagree with the thesaurus. Some claim that the thesaurus ruins and diminishes language.

Creative Vocabulary Boost

The thesaurus can be your best friend when you’re attempting to write better or are just looking for a more accurate word. Increasing your vocabulary helps you write more creatively, improves your oral and written communication skills, and can help you advance in your job.

Although Peter Mark Roget’s birth is celebrated on this day, the originator of the observance was not located in our investigation. We did, however, discover several new terms to expand our vocabulary.
