Nirmala Sitharaman: On October 8, Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance minister, went shopping with regular people at a neighbourhood market in Chennai. During her daylong tour of Chennai, she made a stop at Mylapore market, where she interacted with vendors and people and bought veggies.

The finance minister spent just one day in Chennai. Later, she made an unplanned visit to a local vegetable market where she chatted with shoppers and vendors. A video of the visit that showed the vendors talking to her about the vegetables quickly became popular on social media. Watch video:
She had earlier in the day officially opened a special needs school in the city. One of Ms. Sitharaman’s stated areas of attention is vegetables, which are one of the key parts of nation’s soaring inflation.
A Twitter user wrote in the comments, “Hope both vendors and consumers also learned how spiralling inflation might erode their savings and steps by the government to bring it under control.”

Consumer price inflation in September compared to the same month last year is “running about 7.4%,” according to a note written by India’s chief economist Kaushik Das on September 20. Compared to August, it was higher than 7%.
According to a study by the global financial organisation Deutsche Bank, there is a chance that it will increase if the trend in food and vegetable costs continues to increase.
