PAN-Aadhaar Linking: According to a report in The Hindu, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request, around 11.5 crore PAN cards were deactivated overall because they weren’t connected to Aadhaar cards before the deadline. PAN and Aadhaar must be linked in accordance with Income Tax regulations. The 30th of June 2023 was the deadline for connecting Aadhaar and PAN.
Madhya Pradesh Activist Uncovers PAN-Aadhaar Linkage Statistics
RTI replied to Madhya Pradesh activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur, as reported by the daily that, “Of the 70.24 crore PAN card holders in India, 57.25 crore have connected their PAN cards to Aadhaar. More than 12 crore PAN cards-of which 11.5 crore have been deactivated-have not been connected to Aadhaar.” The response did, however, also mention that a ₹1,000 fine must be paid in order to deactivate these Aadhaar.

- Go to www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ to access the official Income Tax e-filing portal.
- Select “Link Aadhaar Status” from the homepage’s menu on the left.
- Enter your Aadhaar and PAN numbers now.
- Next, select “View Link Aadhaar Status.”
Section 139AA of Income Tax Act Mandates Aadhaar-PAN Linkage
According to section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, any person who is qualified for an Aadhaar number and has been assigned a Permanent Account Number (PAN) as of July 1, 2017, must notify Aadhaar in the format and way specified. Therefore, before the deadline, these individuals must obligingly link their Aadhaar and PAN.
UIDAI Encourages Updates for Cards Held for Ten Years
As to the Business Standard article, UIDAI has extended the deadline for free Aadhaar document updates by three months, from September 14, 2023, to December 14, 2023. In addition, UIDAI has encouraged cardholders who have had their cards for ten years to update their information with the most recent details. It is necessary to update information like name, address, and family data in the event of a marriage or death. Updates to the details can be made in-person at Common Services Centres (CSC) for ₹25, or for free on the UIDAI website.
