Passport News

Passport News: Is the world saying goodbye to passports? This question has recently become a source of contention. Britain is the reason for this. The UK government has announced plans to install new, high-tech e-gates at airports. It also has cutting-edge facial recognition technology. The technology is already in use in airports throughout the world, including Japan, Singapore, and Dubai. The globe is getting ready to say farewell to the passport era, thanks to advances in technology. Airport immigration is now easier than ever before thanks to this technology.

UK Home Office Unveils High-Tech Plans

The UK Home Office has announced plans to outfit airports with new, high-tech e-gates that will include facial recognition technology. According to the government, this new technology will bring Britain’s border up to the level of other developed countries, notably Dubai. Later this year, the new e-gate will be tested. The UK has already begun implementing the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for travellers entering the UK from overseas who do not have a visa. This plan costs approximately Rs 1,000 each traveller.

The UK’s New Process for Air Travel

To board a plane in the United Kingdom, travellers must first download an app, answer a series of questions, scan their passport, and upload a photo. Only those with an ETA are permitted to board. Citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan will be able to participate in the ETA programme beginning in February. This amenity is currently exclusively available to Qataris.

The Home Office intends to implement an ETA for all visitors to the UK, including European citizens, who will not require a visa for short stays. Tourists who are British or Irish must first supply biometric information in order to apply for a UK passport today. There are around 270 e-gates spread across 15 aviation and rail travel hubs in the United Kingdom. All of these will require replacement with modern technology. According to officials, it will be safer. Originally available only to visitors from the UK and EU, British e-gates are now used by visitors from Canada, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, the US and many other countries.

Dubai’s Biometric Revolution

Dubai International Airport introduced biometric’smart gates’ in 2018, which utilise facial recognition to confirm travellers’ IDs in as little as five seconds. Instead of static passports, travellers can now authenticate themselves using fingerprints or facial scans. However, the majority of contactless smart gates at Dubai airport terminals still require travellers to scan their passports upon arrival and departure. Singapore has stated that it intends to implement automatic immigration clearance beginning this year.

Singapore’s Passport-Free Paradigm

This enables visitors to depart the city or state without a passport. Singapore is one of the world’s first countries to enable automated, passport-free entry. In various airports throughout the world, facial recognition technology is already in use. Hong Kong International Airport, Tokyo Narita Airport, Tokyo Haneda Airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, London Heathrow, and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport are among them.
