Paytm, BHIM, Google Pay Users Take Note! Online Payment Apps to Deactivate THESE UPI IDs, Check Yours Now

NPCI

NPCI: Payment apps are required by the National Payments Corporation (NPCI) to deactivate UPI IDs that have not been used as of December 31 and have been dormant for more than a year. This action is intended to stop customers from changing their mobile number without removing their previous number from the banking system, which could result in unintentional money transfers.

Telecom Companies’ Deactivation Policy

After ninety days, telecom companies may provide deactivated mobile numbers to a new subscriber, as per the guidelines set forth by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). In the event that the user fails to update the mobile number linked to their bank account, this could result in accidental transfers. Therefore, by December 31, 2023, Third Party App Providers (TPAP) and Payment Service Providers (PSP) must act.

User Responsibility

It is imperative for users of any UPI app—be it Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or another app—to confirm that their ID hasn’t been inactive for longer than a year. In addition, they ought to make sure that none of the phone numbers associated with their UPI IDs have been dormant for longer than three months.

NPCI Guidelines for Providers

As per the NPCI circular, TPAPs and PSP banks are required to ascertain the UPI IDs, corresponding UPI numbers, and phone numbers of clients who have not carried out any financial or non-financial transactions via UPI apps for a duration of one year. These customers will no longer be able to make inward credit transactions using their UPI IDs or UPI numbers, and their phone numbers will be deregistered from the UPI mapper.

Re-linking UPI and Registration Process

To re-link their UPI, customers who have had their phone numbers and UPI IDs blocked for inward credit transactions must re-register in their UPI apps. They can keep using their UPI PIN as needed to make payments and other non-financial transactions.
