In a significant announcement, the Hemant Soren-led government in Jharkhand has brought cheer to the common people by lowering the age of pension eligibility by 10 years. This transformative decision opens the doors for residents aged 50 and above to access the benefits of the government pension.

Hemant Soren announces a groundbreaking move, reserving 75 percent of jobs in state companies. This strategic step aims to enhance economic inclusivity and provide substantial opportunities for the residents of Jharkhand.

Who Qualifies for Pension Benefits?

The government’s pension initiatives have witnessed remarkable growth, with a 200 percent increase in the number of pensioners. To qualify for the old age pension, one must be a Jharkhand resident, non-taxpayer, and not availing any other pension. This welfare measure has incurred an expenditure of Rs 2,400 crore in the current financial year.

How Many Individuals Received Pension?

Under the Old Age Pension Scheme, the government has disbursed pensions to 14.25 lakh beneficiaries till March 2023, reflecting a significant rise from 3.45 lakh beneficiaries in December 2019. Notable increases are observed in vulnerable tribal group, destitute women, HIV AIDS patients, and disability pension beneficiaries.

Total Expenditure

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report reveals that the state government, leveraging Rs 69,722 crore from central assistance, has allocated 40 percent of this revenue towards salaries, allowances, pensions, and interest payments on loans for development schemes. In the fiscal year 2021-2022, Rs 13,979 crore was allocated for salary allowances, Rs 7614 crore for pensions, and Rs 6,286 crore for interest payments.
