PM Matru Vandana Yojana: Numerous initiatives in support of women have been launched by the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is one such programme. The central government offers the conditional pregnant woman financial assistance under this programme.
Financial Incentives for Pregnant Women
On January 1, 2017, the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) was launched. But after three years, in April 2022, it was changed and included in Mission Shakti. Its goal is to give pregnant women a financial incentive to make up for some of the wages they lost during their pregnancy, allowing them to get the rest they need both before and after the baby is born. Through this, enhancing health-related behaviour among expectant mothers and nursing mothers (PW&LM) is also emphasised.
Second Daughter’s Incentive
A maternity bonus of Rs 5,000/-paid in two installments is offered under the initiative to expectant mothers from economically and socially disadvantaged households. As long as the second child is a girl, the program’s benefits are now available to her as well. Under this new arrangement, moms who give birth to a second girl child are eligible to get ₹6000 as an incentive in one installment.
Impact of Maternity Bonus
This will also encourage female feticide and raise labour force participation, which will both help to improve the sex ratio at birth. In addition, the programme promotes timely vaccination, delivery registration, and institutional birth registration. Over 3.11 million recipients have received financial help under this plan since it began, with a total of Rs 14,103 crore distributed. The beneficiary receives the funds with ease thanks to Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) via the PMMVY mobile app and website.
