Punjab News: Punjab’s Transport Minister, Laljit Singh Bhullar, announced that the state government will prepare a case for regularizing bus drivers and conductors, aimed at securing approval from the state cabinet. Following discussions with representatives of the Punjab Roadways/PUNBUS and PRTC Contract Workers Union, Bhullar instructed officials to create a formal policy transitioning outsourced employees to regular contracts. Additionally, Bhullar emphasized resolving departmental issues facing drivers and conductors with empathy.
Focus on Wage and Policy Reforms
Among the requests presented by union representatives was an annual 5% salary increment for newly hired drivers and conductors. In response, the minister directed officials to create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the wage increment policy, ensuring transparent guidelines for salary growth among transport staff.
Moving Towards Stability for Transport Workers
This effort represents the Punjab government’s broader commitment to stabilizing the employment of state transport workers. With this policy, the government aims to address workforce concerns and support the welfare of contract-based employees, potentially enhancing their job security and welfare through cabinet-approved regularization.
This move is anticipated to address long-standing demands within the transport sector, paving the way for improved job security and fair employment practices across Punjab’s public transport services.
