Raksha Bandhan 2024: Today, August 19, 2024, is Raksha Bandhan, the festival that honours the relationship between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi on their brother’s wrist and pray for his long life, while brothers pledge to protect their sisters in return. For siblings, this festival, which falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shravana month, is very important. It is said that after 90 years, an extremely auspicious alignment has occurred, making this Raksha Bandhan especially meaningful. The relationship between a brother and sister can be strengthened by tying a rakhi during the auspicious time. Auspicious Timings for Tying Rakhi
Talking about the auspicious timings, the Vijay Muhurat is from 2:35 PM to 3:27 PM. This time is considered highly favorable for tying the rakhi. Another auspicious time is the Godhuli Muhurat, which falls between 6:56 PM and 7:18 PM. Tying a rakhi during this period is also considered very lucky. Additionally, the Sayahna Sandhya Muhurat is from 6:56 PM to 8:02 PM, and the Amrit Kaal is from 8:24 PM to 9:50 PM. The overall auspicious time to tie the rakhi is from 1:46 PM to 4:30 PM, and the second favorable period is from 6:56 PM to 9:07 PM.
Timings to Avoid
It is important to note that the Bhadra period begins at 2:21 AM on August 19 and the Bhadra Poonch (tail) will be from 9:51 AM to 10:53 AM. The Bhadra Mukha (head) will be from 10:53 AM to 12:37 PM, with the Bhadra period ending at 1:30 PM. During these times, it is advised to avoid tying the rakhi.
How to Tie the Rakhi
To tie the rakhi, first, have your brother sit in front of you. Begin by tying the rakhi on his wrist and applying a tilak on his forehead. Sprinkle some rice (akshat) over him, then perform aarti. After this, offer him sweets and pray for his well-being.
Recite the Auspicious Mantra
While tying the rakhi, you can recite the following mantra for your brother’s protection:
Yena baddho Bali Raja danavendro mahābalah
Tena tvām abhibadhnāmi rakṣhe mā chala mā chal
This translates to: I am tying a Raksha to you, similar to the one tied to Bali the powerful king of demons. Oh Rakshaa, be firm, do not waver.
