Sadhguru Tips: In terms of the argument “Love Marriage vs. Arranged Marriage: Which Is Better?” Jaggi Vasudev, often referred to to as Sadhguru, provides fresh perspectives that go against traditional wisdom. According to him, the maturity and responsibility with which two people manage their relationship determines the success of a marriage, not how it was set up.
Sadhguru notes that arranged marriages are generally associated with negative connotations, particularly in the contemporary world when many view them as outmoded or even as a tool of societal control. He does stress, though, that every marriage is fundamentally an agreement. Just who sets it up—your parents, a dating app, or maybe a fortuitous meeting at a bar—is the question.
Understanding the Role of Responsibility in Marriage
Sadhguru says marriage is more about how you manage the relationship than it is about who you marry or how you met. He quiporily notes that what counts is the degree of understanding and responsibility each partner brings to the table, regardless of whether it’s planned by your parents or a local pub.
He uses statistical comparisons to highlight his point: countries with higher rates of arranged marriages, like India, have significantly lower divorce rates compared to countries where love marriages are more common. Sadhguru argues that when marriages are arranged by those who genuinely care for you, such as your parents, the chances of making a thoughtful, long-term decision are higher.
The True Essence of Marriage
Sadhguru also reflects on his own experience, sharing how he married without knowing his wife’s full background, focusing instead on the person she was. This, he suggests, is the key to any successful relationship—knowing that a marriage is not a mere transaction based on wealth, social status, or even initial infatuation. Instead, it’s a partnership where both individuals commit to living joyfully and responsibly together.
He advises that if you can keep your ego and selfish desires in check, and focus on being a joyful, complete human being, then any marriage—whether arranged or love—can be a source of happiness and fulfillment.
