After putting a live eel into his anus, the 31-year-old Indian national had a potentially fatal medical emergency when the eel bit through his colon and rectum to reach his abdominal cavities. This peculiar incidence happened on July 27, 2024, when the man with acute abdominal pain was taken to Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi.
The Disturbing Discovery
Doctors examined the severely injured patient as soon as he was admitted. X-rays and other imaging tests showed the eel’s bones inside his abdominal cavity, suggesting that it had attempted to break free by biting through his colon and rectum. The severity of the situation was described by Dr. Le Nhat Huy, vice director of the department of colorectal and perineal surgery, who said, “The eel had bitten through the patient’s rectum and colon to escape into the abdominal cavity.”
Emergency Surgery
Doctors first tried to extract the eel through the anus, but they ran into a big problem because the patient had also inserted a lime. The patient decided to have emergency surgery because his health was getting worse. A live eel that was almost 25 inches long and roughly 4 inches in diameter was discovered by the doctors during the procedure. They made sure there were no more foreign items in the patient’s body by successfully extracting the lime and the eel. The doctors conducted a colostomy to stop faecal matter from getting through the freshly sutured areas because of the harm the eel’s bite had caused.
A Cautionary Tale
Viet Duc Hospital has dealt with similar cases with young guys inserting different objects for sexual pleasure; this incidence is not a unique incident. Although the hospital has previously been able to remove things like adult toys and bottles, this was the first instance when a live animal was involved. Dr. Huy cautioned against these risky activities, highlighting the fact that “Eels can survive in anaerobic conditions for a long time and have the ability to bite through the gastrointestinal tract.” He warned against putting live animals into one’s body because the results can be severe and unpredictably bad.
