Uber Fraud Alert: A Delhi resident has sparked a cautionary tale on social media after claiming he was scammed by an Uber driver using a fake screenshot. The incident highlights the importance of vigilance for riders using ride-hailing services in the capital.
Man Claims Driver Doctored Payment Screen
The user, who shared his story on Reddit, stated he booked an Uber Go ride from IGI Airport on the night of February 24th. The app displayed a fare of around ₹340, but upon reaching his destination, the driver demanded ₹648. Attributing the difference to “wait charges,” the man, unwilling to cause a scene, paid the inflated amount and requested a screenshot of the payment screen.
Suspicious Details Lead to Uncovered Fraud
The next day, upon closer inspection of the screenshot, the man noticed a misspelling of his name. Doubting the legitimacy, he checked the Uber app and discovered the actual fare charged was only ₹127.48. He contacted Uber for a refund but received a meager ₹127.08.
Spoof App Used to Inflate Fare
The user suspects the driver used a spoofed app to display a fabricated payment screen. He believes the driver’s attempt to distract him during the ride served as a ploy to divert attention from the scam.

- Double-Check App Information: Always verify the ride fare displayed on your Uber app. This is the most reliable source for accurate pricing.
- Beware of Spelling Errors: Misspelled names on screenshots can be a red flag.
- Report Fraudulent Activity: If you suspect a fare discrepancy, immediately report it to Uber’s customer support and local authorities.
- Request App Relaunch: If the final fare significantly differs from the initial estimate, request the driver to relaunch the Uber app in your presence to confirm its legitimacy.
