UK General Election: Keir Starmer’s Labour Party Secures Majority in Historic UK General Election

UK General Election: United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat in the UK general election on Friday and congratulated Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on becoming the next prime minister. The Labour Party secured a majority by winning 326 out of the 650 seats in Parliament.

Sunak arrived at the counting centre in his Richmond constituency on Friday morning and addressed the media as Labour continued to lead in over 300 seats. He took “responsibility” for the Conservative Party’s defeat, acknowledging that the results “delivered a sobering verdict” for the Tories. Despite trailing earlier, Sunak ultimately won his Richmond seat with a vast majority.

With more than half of all seats counted, Labour, led by Keir Starmer, has achieved the necessary 326 seats to form a majority government, ending the Conservatives’ 14-year rule. In his victory speech in London, Starmer declared, “We did it. Change begins now.” He emphasized that hope is “shining once again on a country with the opportunity after 14 years to get its future back.”

Following Labour’s historic victory, Prime Minister Sunak is expected to resign from his post soon. He stated that he would head to London in the coming hours and promised an orderly transition to the Labour government. Sunak is set to visit King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Friday to officially resign. Subsequently, Starmer is expected to be driven to the palace to receive the king’s permission to form a government.

While the Labour Party has secured a majority with 326 seats, the governing Conservative Party has won 44 seats so far. The left-of-centre Liberal Democrats have claimed 32 seats, and the hard-right, anti-immigration Reform UK has won 4 seats. This significant shift marks a new chapter in British politics, with Keir Starmer poised to lead the country as its new prime minister.
