Uttarakhand News: A sophisticated cyberattack has severely disrupted Uttarakhand’s critical IT infrastructure, rendering over 90 government websites, including the Chief Minister’s helpline, completely inoperative. The attack, which occurred early Thursday, has brought the state’s digital operations to a grinding halt, affecting both public services and internal government functioning.
Among the many services impacted are essential e-office systems across multiple districts, leading to a total shutdown of government operations. Land registry services and crucial functions within secretariats and public offices have been immobilized. Public grievances submitted via the CM helpline remain unattended as the entire system is non-functional.
Sophisticated Breach of Government IT Systems
The cyberattack was highly advanced, targeting the state’s most secure internet services and breaching the primary state data center. This has made it nearly impossible for the affected websites to remain operational. Nitesh Jha, the head of the state IT department, quickly activated emergency protocols. A team of experts, led by IT Director Nitika Khandelwal, has been working tirelessly to restore services. Despite their efforts, the virus remained active, preventing recovery throughout the day.
Specialized Cybersecurity Experts Brought In
A specialized team of cybersecurity experts has been enlisted to assess the full extent of the attack. The virus used in the breach is reported to be highly advanced, and experts are working with various agencies to eliminate the threat and restore systems. However, it remains unclear how long it will take to fully recover all affected services.
Ongoing Recovery and Long-Term Concerns
While efforts are underway to restore digital operations, the state’s online governance remains largely non-functional. Authorities have urged the public to be patient as they work to bring systems back online. Experts have raised concerns about the potential long-term impact, fearing that sensitive government information may have been compromised. Investigations are ongoing to determine the root cause of the attack and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This major breach highlights the growing threat of cyberattacks on government systems and underscores the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in public administration.
