ICC ODI World Cup: The 1983 World Cup victory was a monumental accomplishment not just in cricket but also in Indian sports as well. BCCI revenue and the team management were the opposite of what it looks like now. The team was led by Kapil Dev, a young all-rounder, against the giants of world cricket. However, defying the odds, the Indian team lifted the cup and showed the world that they were there to dominate. Though, there are some interesting back-stage stories from the tournament which even the biggest fans might not be aware of. In this article, let’s have a look at them:
5 Interesting stories from the 1983 ICC ODI World Cup Victory
1. The team that embarked on this journey didn’t have a coach, and reportedly lacked a doctor or physiotherapist as well. However, they did have a manager, PR Man Singh, who was portrayed by Pankaj Tripathi in the movie ’83.’
2. We’ve all witnessed the images of the Indian crowd rushing onto the ground after our victory. Interestingly, they were also a vital part of the celebrations. The players shared the jubilation with the supporters by handing out champagne from the balcony of Lord’s. As the champagne ran out, they resorted to distributing milk bottles.
3. Kapil Dev‘s monumental innings of 175 against Zimbabwe wasn’t broadcasted due to equipment being allocated for the “more significant” West Indies vs Australia match, and also because the BBC was on strike that day.
4. Following their World Cup victory, the BCCI wanted to reward the players but faced financial constraints. To overcome this, they organized a concert featuring Lata Mangeshkar, which proved to be a massive success, generating sufficient funds to award each player with ₹1 lakh.
5. The Indian cricket team faced a rather amusing issue at the airport due to excess baggage, but not due to the usual equipment. Surprisingly, their baggage included items like mangoes and spices.
