Aman Sehrawat Secures Paris 2024 Olympics Quota for India, Deepak Punia Misses Out

Aman Sehrawat

The emerging star of Indian wrestling, Aman Sehrawat, earned a coveted slot for India in the men’s 57kg freestyle category at the World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers held in Istanbul, Turkey. This incredible accomplishment adds another significant chapter to the history of wrestling in India by securing the country’s first men’s freestyle wrestling Paris 2024 quota.

Sehrawat’s Triumph in Istanbul

In the semifinal round, Sehrawat proved his worth against strong opponents on the mat by defeating Chongsong Han of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, 12-2. Sehrawat’s triumph secured India’s sixth wrestling quota for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

A Triumph of Grit and Talent

Sehrawat had an unshakeable concentration and fierce attitude right from the start, perfectly capturing the qualities of a great champion. “I slept last night knowing that I just have to fight for six minutes today,” it makes no difference if you win or lose. I simply wanted to do my fight,” the athlete said.

Missed Opportunity for Deepak Punia

Deepak Punia, the silver medallist from the Asian Games, suffered a blow in his pursuit of an Olympic quota in the 86kg division. Punia nearly missed obtaining an Indian quota after he lost his first fight versus China’s Zushen Lin, losing 6-4 despite leading 3-0 at the beginning.
