Amidst the political unrest, ICC has decided to move the upcoming Women's T20i World Cup 2024 away from Bangladesh.

After much speculation and trying, ICC has decided to move the upcoming Women’s T20i World Cup 2024 away from Bangladesh. Amidst all the political unrest this looks like the best action to take.

It is a huge loss for Bangladesh and the Sub-continent as a tournament like this holds very good value. That is why Pakistan went high and dry on the hosting rights of the Champions Trophy 2025.

But as Alessa Healy stated, amidst all the violence, a cricket tournament would be the last thing on anyone’s mind. When people are scared for their lives, cricket should never be the priority.

ICC Appoints New Venue

The ICC has decided that the United Arab Emirates(UAE) would be the venue for the upcoming tournament. Before that, BCCI declined to host the tournament on such short notice and no other country came forward.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board(BCB) has agreed to shift the venue to a different country but will remain the official host. The tournament is supposed to take place from October 3 to 20th.

ICC CEO stated, “It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event.

I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible.”

Would Not Have Been Right

A few days ago, Australian skipper Alessa Healy also stated that playing a tournament in Bangladesh currently would not be right. She stated,

“I’d find it hard to fathom playing there [in Bangladesh] at the moment, as a human being, I feel like it might be the wrong thing to do. Taking resources away from a country that is struggling. They need everyone they can get in there to help people that are dying.”
