Amir Nasr-Azadani: A 26-year-old professional Iranian footballer, is in danger of being executed for his alleged role in the purported murder of Colonel Esmaeil Cheraghi and for advocating for women’s rights, both of which have provoked uproar on social media. A player for the national youth team and Iran’s main league, Nasr-Azadani was reportedly given the death penalty on November 17 for speaking out in favour of women’s rights during anti-government demonstrations that followed Mahsa Amini’s passing.
Why is Amir Nasr-Azadani given death sentence
Furthermore, reports claimed that the regime had detained Nasr-Azadani in connection with the alleged killings of Colonel Esmaeil Cheraghi and two Basij members. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) reportedly detained three people from Isfahan, including Nasr-Azadani, who has played for teams including Rah-Ahan Tehran FC, Tractor SC, and Gol-e Rayhan. Reportedely, Iranian defender read his confession while making an appearance on national television on 20th November.
Mahsa Amini, 22, died while in custody in September after being detained for allegedly disobeying the country’s Islamic dress code. Her death sparked widespread anti-government protests in Iran. The FIFPRO, the international organisation that represents professional footballers, has expressed “shock and revulsion” over the news of Amir Nasr-execution Azadani’s and has demanded the sentence to be overturned.
FIFPRO stands in solidarity with Amir Nasr-Azadani
On Monday, a tweet from the players’ union FIFPRO’s official account said: “FIFPRO is shocked and sickened by reports that professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani faces execution in Iran after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country.”
“We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for the immediate removal of his punishment,” it added. In connection with the anti-government protests, Iran has already killed two people. Mohsen Shekari, 23, was executed by hanging on December 8 after a revolutionary court declared him guilty of “waging war against God.” After being convicted responsible for the deaths of two security guards, Majidreza Rahnavard was publicly hanged from a crane on December 12.
