Ashes 2023: England’s readiness for Ashes 2023 has been dealt a significant setback as James Anderson’s participation in the upcoming one-off test against Ireland, scheduled to commence on June 1, is uncertain. The experienced bowler sustained a groin injury while representing Lancashire in their recent County Championship match against Somerset at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) acknowledged the injury in an official statement and mentioned that they will evaluate Anderson’s progress in his rehabilitation leading up to the Lord’s Test against Ireland.
James Anderson suffers groin injury
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on the evening of Sunday, May 14, that James Anderson experienced a minor strain in his right groin while bowling on the first day of the match on May 11. Anderson displayed an impressive performance, taking 2 wickets for 16 runs in his 14-over spell on the opening day. However, due to discomfort caused by his groin injury, he was unable to continue playing and subsequently missed the rest of the match. The match concluded in a draw, with 19-year-old James Rew scoring twin centuries.
The England cricket team has not yet revealed the lineup for the Ireland Test, but it is anticipated that James Anderson will be omitted from the squad as they have their sights set on the upcoming Ashes series, commencing on June 16 in Birmingham. Considering that Lancashire’s next County game is scheduled for June 11, there will be insufficient time for Anderson to fully recover and regain match fitness before the Ashes. As a 40-year-old veteran, Anderson is currently England’s top choice for a pace bowler in preparation for the series against Australia. Therefore, his potential absence would undoubtedly have a significant impact on the English team.
Jofra Arches suffering from elbow injury
In addition, Jofra Archer, another prominent fast bowler, is grappling with a persistent elbow injury and is likely to be absent from the Ashes series as well. Archer made the decision to depart from the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023 after participating in only five matches for the Mumbai Indians. He has returned to England in order to concentrate on his rehabilitation and increase his chances of being selected for the Ashes squad.
