Asia Cup 2023: Sanju Samson was sent back home from India’s Asia Cup squad after the team management decided to include KL Rahul ahead of the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2023. KL Rahul was under treatment after he got an injury during a match in IPL against RCB.
Sanju Samson sent back home
Samson had initially been selected as Rahul’s backup due to Rahul’s unavailability for the group-stage matches against Pakistan and Nepal because of a minor injury. However, Rahul subsequently recovered and received clearance from the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, leading to his inclusion in the Indian squad.
On Thursday, KL Rahul had his first training session with Team India following a lengthy injury break. During this session in the indoor nets in Colombo, Rahul focused on his batting for an extended period. Although some observers were surprised that he didn’t take up wicketkeeping duties, this was primarily because of space limitations in the indoor net area, and there were no concerns about his fitness as he moved fluidly while batting.
KL Rahul practises for wicketkeeping
Any doubts regarding KL Rahul’s fitness were dispelled on Friday as he took on the role of wicketkeeper for nearly 90 minutes during a training session under the lights. The favorable weather conditions on Friday allowed the Indian team to practice outdoors at the R Premadasa Stadium in preparation for their Super 4 opening match against Pakistan on Sunday.
