Asia Cup 2023: The Asia Cup, which is set to take place in September 2023, has faced a logjam as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) tries to find a solution after India declined to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. The PCB has been keen on retaining the hosting rights of the multi-nation tournament in Pakistan, but given India’s refusal to play in Pakistan, the issue has become complicated. In the last Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, no resolution was reached.
Solution proposed by PCB
The PCB may have found a solution to the impasse, according to sources within the board. Pakistan may continue to host the tournament, but India could be offered the option to play its matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where some of the games will also be held. This would allow Pakistan to retain the hosting rights of the tournament and also facilitate India’s participation.
Further discussions on the matter are expected to take place in the next ICC meeting, where PCB chief Najam Sethi will address the hosting of the Asia Cup ODI tournament. While the decision has not yet been finalised, the sources claim that the most likely solution will be to have some of the matches played in the UAE, with India playing all of its games there, including the final, if they qualify.
Pakistan desperate to retain hosting rights
Pakistan has not hosted a multi-nation tournament for quite some time, and the PCB is keen to retain the hosting rights of the Asia Cup in the country. According to sources, Sethi made it clear at the ACC meeting that the PCB wants to host the tournament in Pakistan and some of the matches at home. Though the UAE, with its three venues of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, is the frontrunner to host the tournament, the decision has been withheld for the time being.
