Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka and Bangladesh cricket boards have reportedly joined hands with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in advocating for the relocation of the esteemed Asia Cup tournament from Pakistan. This comes as a result of India’s decision to withdraw from the championship. While Pakistan was initially granted the hosting rights for the Asia Cup 2023, recent developments strongly indicate that the tournament is poised to be shifted away from its originally designated host country.
Sri Lanka & Bangladesh to host Asia Cup 2023?
According to reports, both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh cricket boards have expressed their desire to host the tournament this year. This aligns with the BCCI’s objective of ensuring that the event takes place at a neutral venue rather than in Pakistan. If the tournament is indeed moved from Pakistan and the Pakistani team declines to participate, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is reportedly highly interested in the possibility of replacing Pakistan with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Jay Shah, has reportedly taken into consideration the financial implications for broadcasters in the event of Pakistan opting out of the tournament. To address this concern, Shah has assured the broadcasters that they will be appropriately compensated in the future through a series involving India.
PCB suggested hybrid model for Asia Cup 2023
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had initially suggested a hybrid model for hosting the Asia Cup 2023, allowing India to play their matches at a neutral venue. However, it is expected that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will reject any such proposal. The ongoing controversy surrounding the Asia Cup shows no signs of resolution, as PCB chairman Najam Sethi has firmly stated that Pakistan will not travel to India if the BCCI does not agree to send their team for the tournament, which was originally planned to be held in Pakistan.
