Asian Games 2023: Many Indian wrestlers were on protested against the WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for the past few months. Now that the protests have calmed down to a certain extent, the wrestling world is looking to resume.
And the first step in that direction is the trials for the Asian Games 2023. But it does not look like it will be that simple. As the wrestlers who were involved in the protest might not be able to get back in shape in due time.
The trials for the Asian Games 2023 are already very delayed. This resulted in the Olympic Council of Asia declining the Indian Olympic Association’s further request of delaying the trials till the first week of August. And now it looks like the higher-ups have decided on a quite unusual plan for the trials.
No Trials For Protestors?
The six protesting wrestlers have asked for more time from the sports ministry. There is no way they will be ready in July. The toll their body took after they were on protest for 45 days is unimaginable. They need time to get back in their best shape.
Many reports are suggesting that the higher-ups are thinking of giving a direct berth to Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat in China. This criterion is based on the point that both of them are contenders for a podium finish.
Both of these wrestlers won medals in their last world championship games. The point discussed was to give Olympic and world championships medalists a direct place in Hangzhou. If this happens then Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Ravi Dhaiya will be directly included in the squad. Ravi Dhaiya won the silver medal in Tokyo Olympics.
Decision Will Be Criticized
It is without any doubt that this decision by the association will be criticized as the contenders who have been preparing for a very long time will not get their chance. Every wrestler has been preparing themselves without National Camp.
