Asian Games 2023: On Wednesday, the Indian team achieved a historic milestone at the Asian Games, surpassing the previous edition’s medal count of 70. This accomplishment was further solidified as compound archers Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam secured India’s 71st medal by clinching the mixed team gold.

Annu Rani of India made history at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou by clinching the gold medal in women’s javelin throw with an impressive throw of 69.92 meters. She became the first Indian woman to win a javelin gold in Asian Games history.

India secures 71 medals at Asian Games 2023 so far

India’s prior record for the highest number of medals was achieved at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang. During that event, Indian athletes secured a total of 70 medals, comprising 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze. On Wednesday, Indian race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo added to the medal count by winning a bronze in the 35km mixed race walk event, thereby equalling the performance from the 2018 Jakarta Games.

Bhupender Singh Bajwa, India’s chef de mission, stated, “It is with great pleasure that I would like to state that India has forged its impression with the best ever medal haul in the Asian Games by crossing the 70 mark in medals tally and there are more to come.”

India sent its biggest-ever delegation aiming to surpass the 100-medal milestone at the prestigious continental tournament. The slogan for the Hangzhou Games was, ‘Aab ki Baar, Sau Paar,’ which translates to “crossing 100 medals this time.” As of now, India boasts 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals, with more than four days of competition remaining.

India concluded Day 10 with 69 medals, securely maintaining the fourth position in the rankings. Day 11 saw them match their medal count from the Jakarta Games. Ram Baboo and Manju Rani earned a bronze in the 35km race walk mixed team event with a timing of 5:51:14, while China secured gold (5:16:41) and Japan claimed silver (5:22:11).

Shortly after, India achieved a historic moment in archery. Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Pravin Ojas Deotale clinched gold in the compound archery mixed team event by narrowly defeating South Korea’s Chaewon So and Jaehoon Joo with a score of 159-158.

Can India win 300 medals in Asian Games 2023?

India has two assured medals in squash doubles and two more in boxing, ensuring a minimum medal count of 78 even without additional podium finishes. Shooting and athletics have been the primary contributors to India’s record-breaking performance at the Asian Games. The shooting contingent has secured 22 medals, while athletics has brought in 23, with events like Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw final still to come. India currently stands fourth in the medal tally, trailing behind China, Japan, and South Korea, all of whom have amassed over 100 medals, with China nearing the remarkable milestone of 300.
