Asian Games: Indian archers Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale clinched a gold medal in the mixed team compound archery event at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. The Indian duo secured victory with a score of 159-158 against the South Korean pair of Chaewon So and Jaehoon Joo. Their performance set a Games record and marked a significant achievement for the Indian archery team.
This gold medal is only the second archery gold that India has won at the Asian Games
The previous gold was secured by the men’s compound team (Rajat Chauhan, Sandeep Kumar, and Abhishek Verma) in Incheon in 2014. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the reigning world champion, and Ojas Deotale, a promising archer, displayed excellent teamwork and precision in their archery competition.
The Indian archery team started their day with a 158-155 victory over Malaysia in the quarter-finals and then defeated Kazakhstan 159-154 in the semi-finals. The South Korean team reached the final by overcoming Vietnam (158-153) and Chinese Taipei (158-153).
The final match was closely contested, with the Indian team initially taking a one-point lead after the opening set of 40 arrows. Both teams achieved a perfect series in the next round. However, in the following round, the Indian team scored a 9, while the Koreans scored a perfect 40, leveling the scores.
Despite this setback, Vennam and Deotale responded with another perfect 40 in the final round, while the Koreans managed a 39. This performance secured India’s victory in the title match.
India’s win in archery at the Asian Games holds significant importance, considering South Korea’s historical dominance in the sport, particularly at the Asian Games. The Koreans have consistently been the top nation in archery, winning the majority of medals in the sport at the Asian Games.
Both Vennam and Deotale have additional opportunities for success, with individual finals in their respective categories scheduled for later in the competition. Their strong performances in the mixed team event bode well for their prospects in the individual competitions.
