Aus Vs Eng Ashes 2023: This Ashes series has been full of controversies. We got the Jonny Bairstow run out, Strac catch, Australian media comments, Prime Ministers getting into banter, and now another low catch comes into play.
Another debate has started over a low catch of Steve Smith by Joe Root on the first slip. It was the finest of margins but the English fans showcased their anger by jeering the decision. It was a heated moment.
Joe Root claimed the catch on the first slip and wasn’t convinced by it either. But things got worse when the replay showed that the catch might have been valid.
A Controversial Catch
After taking a whopping lead of 271 runs, England was cruising by taking 2 wickets early on. They were searching for a third wicket when Chris Woakes found Smith’s edge towards the first slip.
Root claimed the ball but did not claim the catch. Umpire sent it to the third umpire anyway and the scene was closer than expected. It is still unclear whether Root put his finer beneath the ball on time or not.
TV Umpire Kumar Dharamsena stated the decision in favor of the batsman and Smith survived. Even the commentators were divided on the catch as both Mark Butcher and Ricky Ponting were not sure of it either.
Aus Vs Eng Ashes 2023: Flop Show Smith
Even after this miraculous save, Smith was not able to leave a mark. Mark Wood nicked him for 17 runs a few minutes later. Jonny Bairstow claimed an easy catch. This series has been unlike Smith where he has not performed well except in the second match.
We hope that he gets back into form in the last test because Australia needs him and without him, the team really loses its balance.
