It was written in stars, wasn’t it? A Smith century after the way the Barmy Army treated him in Edgbaston, Lords’ crowd was forced to give him a standing ovation. Smith was on a mission to prove something. And when he drove James Anderson in the 92nd over, the revenge was complete.

Smith completed his 32nd test century while the wickets were constantly falling on the other end on day 2. Josh Tongue got the wicket of Steve Smith in the 96th over, but by then, the best test batsman had already proved his worth.
