Another controversy sparked in Ashes 2023 when Steve Smith was given not out for a run-out call. The decision has divided cricket fans in two ways. Some are against the decision while some are praising the umpire for taking the tough yet right decision.
Indian of-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also jumped into the controversy and tweeted his feelings about the decision. Well, Ashwin has been very involved in the series since the start and has been sharing his thoughts continuously.
Aus Vs Eng Ashes 2023: Controversial Not Out
The instance happened when Smith was on 44 runs. He tapped the ball lightly toward mid-wicket and tried to take a cheeky single. But substitute fielder George Ealham was very quick to it and attempted a perfect throw toward keeper Jonny Bairstow.
The English keeper removed the bails in a flash and appealed. The leg umpire was not sure and the decision went to third umpire. After seeing the replay, English players started celebrating while Smith started walking towards the pavilion.
But Nitin Menon took a very long time and ruled the decision in favor of the Australian batsman. Which even left him shocked. Apparently, the bails came off the groove completely only after Smith had crossed the crease with his bat.
Ashwin Responds
Various pundits and experts showcased their opinion on the decision. The number 1 test bowler also came forward and he praised Nitin Menon for making the right decision. Meanwhile, English pacer Stuart Broad stated that the benefit of the doubt went Smith’s way.
