AUS vs IRE: At The Gabba, the defending champions Australia have given a target of 180 runs. Following Ireland’s invitation for Australia to choose to bat first, the visitors were dealt an early setback when David Warner was dismissed, but captain Aaron Finch and Mitchell Marsh didn’t let that derail their team’s spirit. Prior to Marsh’s dismissal by Barry McCarthy in the ninth over, the two top-order batsmen added 52 runs for the second wicket.
Marcus Stoinis continued his stellar play after Glen Maxwell’s brief stay in the middle while Aaron finch also completed his half century. However, Barry McCarthy emerged as the Irish team’s only hope as the other bowlers were getting destroyed all over the field.
The 30-year-old right-arm medium pacer made two early forays into the game and, with his superhuman effort at long-on, entered the top fielding performances in the current ICC competition by saving four critical runs for the side.
In the 15th over of the game, Mark Adair bowled a slower outside-off delivery that Stoinis lofted over long-on. While it appeared to be a six to most, McCarthy leaped backward and caught the ball in his left hand, and threw it back after quickly realising that he would land on the boundary cushions.
Even Mathew Wade, who was seated in the Australian dugout, noticed McCarthy’s feat and commended the Irish pacer’s effort, which attracted the attention of everyone in the stadium.
