AUS vs SA: Usman Khawaja, the Australian opener, reached his 13th Test century on Day 2 of the third Test match between Australia and South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 5. The left-hander added a three-figure total in the list of his three previous tonnes at the SCG, continuing his record run with the place. He performed a little dance for his family as he marked the momentous event.
Khawaja slams third consecutive century at SCG
Due to poor lighting on Day 1 of the last Test of the series, only 47 overs could be played, leaving the 36-year-old unbeaten on 54 overnight. In the 76th over of Australia’s first innings, Khawaja scored his century. In the meantime, he also became only the fourth player to slam three consecutive centuries at SCG, which itself speaks the value of the record.
The left-handed hitter sprinted two after pulling a length ball from South African pacer Kagiso Rabada to the right of deep square. He celebrated his century with a yell of joy and thanked the audience for their kind welcome. He also performed a little dance at the ground that holds a particular place in his heart in what appeared to be an unplanned moment.
The southpaw hit 137 and 101* in a drawn Ashes match against the same opponents in January 2022 after smashing 171 against England in January 2018.
