Australian Open 2023: Aryna Sabalenka has defeated Elena Rybakina by scores of 4-6, 6-3, and 6-4 to take home the 2023 Australian Open title. Sabalenka has had a great year, continuing her undefeated streak in 2023 by defeating Wimbledon champion Rybakina to win her first Grand Slam of her career in singles.
Sabalenka crowned the Australian Open 2023
The world No. 5 came back from an error-filled start by playing her best tennis, hitting 51 winners, to win the matchup between two of the WTA Tour’s hardest hitters. At the iconic Melbourne Park, Rybakina made a strong opening statement to the much-anticipated match.
The 23-year-old broke from a 40-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead after serving three aces in her opening serve game. Sabalenka’s erratic forehand into the tramlines secured the break. At 4-4, Sabalenka used a backhand winner down the line to retake the break, but Rybakina reclaimed it when the Belarusian double-failed for the sixth time in the match.

Ryabkina’s valiant attempt goes in vain
The world No. 5 battled valiantly to retain her remaining service games despite both players unleashing strong forehand blows, but she was ultimately successful in forcing a third set decider with a devastating ace. The third set, when a Grand Slam championship was on the line, was naturally stressful, with both players launching ferocious forehands and wins from the baseline.
Sabalenka, though, made the winning move at 3-3. After saving a break point, Sabalenka wasted another championship opportunity with a long forehand. However, Rybakina overcooked a forehand on the fourth attempt, causing Sabalenka to fall to the ground sobbing in victory.
