Australian Open: Defending Champion Rafael Nadal is out of Australian Open after losing in straight sets in the second round. United States’ Mackenzie McDonald moved to the third round after securing a memorable victory over the No.1 seed.
Shameful Loss for No.1 seed Rafael Nadal
McDonald played with good intent and passion in front of injury-hit Rafael Nadal. The score reads 4-6. 4-5. 5-7. The Spaniard was suffering from a hip injury and it reflected when the game was on as he took time out and paused many times in the game. This was also Nadal’s worst Grand Slam result in the last seven years.
“He’s in absolute disbelief of what just happened. There is nothing in the swing in this the backhand which was a beautiful winner that would have indicated there was a problem but there certainly is,” Jim Courier said during commentary.
McDonald will now face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Japanese 31st seed Yoshihito Nishioka and Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina in the third round on Friday.
Nadal’s wife breaks in tears
Nadal’s wife Maria Francisca Perello was in tears after watching her husband struggling in the middle.
