Bajrang Punia, ace Indian wrestler, became the only Indian to win four medals at the World Wrestling Championships on Sunday in Serbia, after winning bronze.
In one of the bouts for the 65 kg bronze medal, Bajrang, who won a bronze in the Olympics in Tokyo last year, narrowly defeated Sebastian C. Rivera of Puerto Rico 11-9 on points. Bajrang, who lost to John Michael Diakomihalis of the U.S. in the quarterfinals, advanced to the bronze medal match by defeating Armenian Vazgen Tevanyen in the repecharge round, winning 7-6 on points.

This is Bajrang’s third bronze medal overall. The famed Indian wrestler previously took home bronze medal in 2013, silver in 2018, and bronze in 2019.
India won two medals throughout the championship
For the current World Championship, India had sent a 30-person team, but, they performed poorly, winning only two medals. Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who won the silver medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, crashed out before the finish line and could not secure the podium finish.

Along with Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat also won a bronze medal at the championships in the women’s 53 kg category. For the same, Vinesh had defeated Swedish opponent Emma Malmgrem 8-0.
