BCCI: For players competing for a position on the national Men’s squad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new “scientific layer” to the selection process. It was first discussed at a recent review meeting where participants included head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, BCCI president Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, NCA head V.V.S. Laxman, and selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma.
The new regulation was implemented in response to recent high-profile injuries that some say cost team India recent important matches. India lost in the T20 World Cup semi-final due to the absence of key bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. They were joined on the sidelines by captain Rohit Sharma, who had recently missed tests himself owing to injury. In fact, Sharma has previously spoken on players being hurt frequently while passing the fitness test.
What is the newly implemented Dexa test?
Through the use of spectral imaging method, the test measures the players’ Bone Mineral Density. To determine the bone density and mineral content of a particular player’s bone, two X-Ray beams of varying energies are employed.
An international benchmark for athletes, the Dexa Test is generally acknowledged throughout the world. In a 10-minute test, it measures a cricketer’s body’s breakdown of adipose tissue, as well as muscle mass and bone mass.
Would focus on players being prone to re-injury
It is anticipated that the Dexa Test will help in enhancing the testing to gauge a player’s level of fitness. Keeping players from being rushed back into action too soon while they are healing is the goal. A player may be at risk of re-injury in such circumstances, which could result in him playing fewer games than he otherwise would have.
Players can preserve their bone density and strength by participating in frequent practise and competition. But when they are healing from injuries, the vital fitness criteria are thrown off. The Dexa Test will serve as a preventive layer to identify whether a recuperating player still faces a danger of reinjury.
