BCCI: A recent report by ESPNCricinfo stated that BCCI tried to convince Gary Kirsten as the head coach for the Indian Women’s team. The board was keen on appointing him as the head coach as they wanted a big international name joined with the Women’s team.
BCCI wants to appoint a new head coach for the Indian Women’s Team on an initial 2-year deal. The deal will see the head coach lead India to the T20 World Cup in 2024 and ODI World Cup in 2025. It will stabilize the management of the Women’s team, which is severely needed.
Rejected BCCI for Other Commitments
It looks like IPL is becoming more of a thorn in the BCCI side than expected. Gary Kirsten denied the opportunity to become the Indian Women’s Team head coach because of his prior commitments. One of those commitments was to the IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.
Kirsten had prior commitments to various T20 franchises. The former South African captain was the head coach of Indian Cricket Team during their World Cup triumph in 2011. A signing like that would have been phenomenol in terms of branding as well as player development.

Charlotte Edwards is the frontrunner
Now that Gary Kirsten has denied the opportunity, BCCI are looking at other candidates. BCCI holds former captain of the England women’s cricket team, Charlotte Edwards in very high regard and She is the frontrunner to take up the charge.
Edwards is the head coach of Mumbai Indians in Women Premier League and won the title with them. Meanwhile, Charlotte has not expressed her desire to coach Indian Women’s team so far but that can change in the future.
BCCI are looking at every possible aspect and are taking their time to make a decision after analysing everything. Till then, Hrishikesh Kanitkar is serving as the interim Head Coach for the Women’s team.
