BCCI: The BCCI has decided to review its policy on the participation of retired players in a foreign league. This decision will be made in the BCCI Apex meeting. Another major decision was to grant 50 crore renovation money to every ground for World Cup 2023.
The need for review came after the constant participation of retired players in foreign leagues. The existing policy states that any player who is enrolled with BCCI can participate in a foreign league after retirement. Retirement should be from all formats of cricket, including IPL.
With the increase in franchise cricket worldwide and even IPL franchise-owning teams in foreign leagues, this trend is becoming a trend. It is predicted that with an increase in franchise cricket, players who are not on the Indian national team can announce early retirement to play in these foreign leagues.
BCCI not changing their stance
BCCI has been constantly criticized for its policy of restricting its players from participating in foreign leagues. But no matter what, none of the players or experts have been able to convince the board to change the policy.
It looks like the BCCI will make the policy even stricter now. The sudden move came after Ambati Rayudu announced his IPL retirement and then signed up with Texas Super Kings. Other senior retired players have also done the same.
Harbhajan Singh became the latest player to sign up with GT20 Canada. Robin Uthhapa has expressed his desire to play all over the world, and even Yusuf Pathan has enrolled himself for Dubai Capitals.
Cooling Off Period
No matter what, it will be tough for BCCI to handle these retirements. There are reports originating that suggest the route BCCI is willing to take. One of the methods is the cooling-off period, just like it is needed for the chief selector position. It will prevent players from immediately registering themselves in a foreign league.
The Apex Meeting will discuss lots of topics, with player contracts and stadium development for World Cup 2023 being the top priority. India is hosting the World Cup completely for the first time, so there is a lot of pressure on BCCI.
