BCCI: With less than 100 days left for World Cup 2023, BCCI is on the fast track to sign a new selection committee chief. They have been looking to hire a big name so that the person does not get dissolved among big names.
And according to the latest reports, it looks like they have found their man. BCCI has been hunting a new chairman since Chetan Sharma left. And with ICC declaring the last date for squad submission, this was needed.
The last date for form submission for the chief post is June 30th, while the interview can be done till July 1st. It was reported that Virender Sehwag was the desired selection for the job, but the former Indian opener rejected the offer.
Ajit Agarkar Is The Frontrunner
Many reports have indicated that Ajit Agarkar is the strongest contender for the job. Agarkar was also a strong contender for the last two elections but withdrew every time. Now he is free from his IPL contacts and needs a new challenge.
If Agarkar is hired, he will be the second selection committee member from West Zone. Agarkar is by far the most experienced candidate for the job and a big name that can keep everyone united. Agarkar has played 26 tests, 191 ODIs, and 4 T20s for India while taking 349 wickets across all formats.
“The CAC has the mandate to pick a selector who can stand up to the high profile team management in case there are differences,” a BCCI official stated.
World Cup Squad Submission
The job won’t be easy; if appointed, Agarkar has to get on with work immidiately immediately. As ICC has declared the final date for preliminary squad submission for World Cup 2023. Agarkar has to look at the performances and submit the team as soon as possible.
He will be the second west zone selector in the committee alongside Salil Ankola. It also means that BCCI will turn away from the zonal selection. The new selector will also have to finalize the team for Asia Cup 2023 as soon as possible.
