Moises Caicedo: Brighton and Chelsea have reached a historic agreement, setting a new British record with a transfer deal worth $146 million for Moises Caicedo. The agreement, finalized on Sunday, August 13, will elevate him to the status of the costliest player in English football, after previously declining offers from Liverpool. This reported arrangement will exceed the amount Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez’s transfer. Notably, Caicedo was absent from Brighton’s weekend squad, where they secured a 4-1 victory against newcomers Luton Town.
Caicedo wanted to join Chelsea
On Friday, Liverpool emerged as the leading contender to acquire the Ecuadorian, submitting a bid of $141 million. Brighton, consenting to the offer within the deal, were content to release the player due to waning interest from Chelsea in recent weeks. Remarkably, a surprising turn of events unfolded when it was revealed that Caicedo, who had previously agreed to a deal with Chelsea in May, desired to honor his commitment to the club. Eventually, he declined joining Liverpool.
With the approval from the Caicedo camp secured, Chelsea has once again entered the competition to sign the 21-year-old player. While the precise details of the arrangement are undisclosed, sources indicate that Chelsea will provide an initial payment of $127 million, supplemented by an additional $19 million in add-ons as part of the deal. The Ecuadorian is anticipated to undergo his medical examination for Chelsea on Monday, August 14, with Brighton granting the necessary clearance for this process to proceed.

Caicedo becomes costliest English footballer
As part of the agreement, Caicedo is set to surpass Enzo Fernandez, thus securing the title of the costliest player in the history of British football. Previously, Chelsea had invested $135 million to secure the services of the Argentinean World Cup winner from Benfica in January, on the final day of the transfer window.
Presently, Fernandez holds the top spot on the list, trailed by Declan Rice, who joined Arsenal from West Ham. Arsenal made a substantial payment of $133 million to secure Rice’s services, a player who played a pivotal role in West Ham’s attainment of their first major trophy in 43 years in June.
