Chetan Sharma, the Chairman of Selectors for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was embroiled in a major scandal on February 14th after he was accused of revealing confidential selection procedures in a sting operation. Sharma was allegedly caught expressing doubts about former India captain Virat Kohli and pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah during the sting operation done by Zee News, and he was also said to have divulged private conversations with India’s head coach Rahul Dravid and Kohli.
Chetan Sharma did a breach of protocol
This is a serious breach of protocol, as national selectors are not allowed to speak to the media, and the BCCI has reportedly launched an investigation into the matter. Sharma, who was re-elected as the chair of selectors by the BCCI after being removed following India’s performance at the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022, is now facing scrutiny about his future, with BCCI Secretary Jay Shah set to make a decision soon.
A BCCI official anonymously said, “It will be (BCCI secretary) Jay’s (Shah) call as to what will be Chetan’s future. The question is whether T20 skipper Hardik Pandya or ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma would like to sit with Chetan in a selection meeting knowing that he has let out internal discussions.”
Scandalous revelations by Chetan Sharma
Chetan further revealed in a sting operation that players who were only 80 to 85% fit were taking injections to make a comeback. In addition, Sharma disclosed his disagreement with the team management over Jasprit Bumrah’s selection for the T20I series against Australia in September 2022, as he had recently recovered from a stress fracture. There were several statements including Sourav Ganguly’s dislike for Virat and Hardik coming to his home.
The BCCI is investigating the matter, as selectors are prohibited from speaking to the media about team selection procedures. Sharma’s future in his current position remains uncertain, with BCCI secretary Jay Shah expected to make a decision soon.
