CPL 2023: The slow over rate problem is gradually increasing in cricket. Even when ICC has turned stricter in the fines for the slow over rate, teams are still doing it. They casually accept the fine.
In the recently finished IPL 2023, we saw so many matches used to run past their finish time. That was disappointing. But it looks like that even the authorities are letting this issue go so easily.
On Saturday, the organizers of the Carribean Premier League announced several penalties the team has to face for slow over-rate. And that includes introducing the red card in the game of cricket!
Change The Trend
The operation director of CPL, Micheal Hall, started the press conference regarding the matter. He introduced new rules and showed his disappointment over this trend of slow overrate.
“It is the duty of those involved in cricket to ensure that the game keeps moving. And we have sensitized both the franchises and our match officials to this duty ahead of the tournament.”
New Rules
Each team will have 85 minutes to bowl the scheduled 20 overs. The 17th over must be completed by the 72nd minute. While the 18th over needs to be completed by 76 minutes and the 19th by the 81st minute.
- If the team is behind the required rate at the start of the 18th over, one additional player will enter the 30-yard circle.
- One more additional player will enter the circle if the team is still behind the over rate at the start of the 19th over.
- If the team is behind the over rate in the 20th over, they will have to lose one player from the ground.
- If the umpire thinks the batting team is delaying the game, they can introduce a five-run penalty after a warning.
