Cricket Corruption: Just a week before the start of the world’s biggest professional cricket league, IPL 2023, a report by sports technology company Sportradar revealed shocking information about corruption in the sport. The report, titled “Betting, Corruption and Match-Fixing,” has identified 13 suspicious cricket matches that occurred globally in 2022.
Surprising reports takes cricketing world by storm
The report is 28 pages long and was compiled by the Sportradar Integrity Services team, which includes experts who analyze betting, match-fixing, and other forms of corruption in sports. A ccording to a recently published report by the Universal Fraud Detection System, there is a staggering number of 1,212 matches in various sports disciplines worldwide that have come under suspicion of fraudulent activity.
The report covers 12 different sports in 92 countries and uses expert analysis to detect any suspicious activity during live sports events. According to the report, football has the highest number of suspicious matches, with 775 games suspected of unlawful activities. Cricket ranks sixth on the list, with handball and futsal also seeing an increase in the number of suspicious matches. Basketball comes in second with 220 suspected matches, and lawn tennis follows with 75 alleged contentious games.
Were the matches played in India?
It was later revealed that those 13 games do not include any of them being played in India. Not just this, in 2020, Sportradar partnered with the BCCI’s anti-corruption unit to identify any illegal betting activities during the Indian Premier League matches.
