Cricket Records: In 2022, England set a new standard for Test cricket with an extraordinary performance. Since former New Zealand great Brendon McCullum took over as coach, the English have won nine of their last ten games. McCullum brought to England his talent for snatching bowling assaults from all corners of venues throughout the globe.
England breaks down 112 year old -record
The English, known as “Bazball,” have infused the Test cricket format with an aggressive style similar to one-day cricket, leaving spectators in amazement. Although Ben Stokes’ team is now rated third, behind Australia and India, their newfound style has allowed them to permanently inscribe their names in history.
With 15 Test matches under its belt, England finished the year 2022 with a run rate of 4.13 per over. A Test cricket record that hasn’t been reached in 112 years. Since the beginning of Test cricket in 1877, it is the second-highest run rate for a calendar year that has ever been recorded.
Highest run-rate by a team in a calendar year:
Team | Run-rate |
Australia in 1910 (2 Tests) | 4.47 |
England in 2022 (15 Tests) | 4.13 |
Australia in 2003 (12 Tests) | 4.08 |
Australia in 2002 (11 Tests) | 3.99 |
South Africa in 1902 (3 Tests) | 3.98 |
Only Australia, who had a run rate of 4.47 per over over two Test matches in 1910, was able to surpass the astounding total. Three times in the history of Test matches had the magic four runs per over been reached, with Australia placing third in 2003 (12 Tests) with 4.08 runs per over.
In the last month of the year, when England faced Pakistan, they increased their aggressive effort. England visited Pakistan and humiliated their opponents 3-0 by hammering Pakistan’s bowling attack for 5.50 runs per over.
