In the second Test of the five-match series in 2014, England elected to field first against India at Lord’s. The pitch resembled the rest of the field, posing significant challenges for the batsmen. Despite the difficult conditions, India had a decent start, with the scoreboard displaying 86-3 when Ajinkya Rahane arrived at the crease. However, the second session brought a swift downturn in fortunes for the Indian team.
Their batting lineup crumbled, and they found themselves in a dire situation at 145-7. This score truly reflected the bowling-friendly nature of the conditions that the players had to contend with. In a dire situation with India struggling at 145/7, Ajinkya Rahane displayed resilience as he faced 69 deliveries to accumulate 28 runs. With the responsibility of being the sole specialist batsman left, he assumed control of the innings. Teaming up with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the duo forged a crucial partnership of 90 runs for the eighth wicket.
As the end seemed imminent, Rahane adopted an aggressive approach, smashing James Anderson for a boundary and a six on consecutive deliveries. He then reached the coveted milestone of a century with another well-timed boundary off Anderson’s bowling.

Shortly after reaching his second Test century, he was dismissed for 103 off a mere 154 deliveries, right after achieving the landmark. In the match, India posted a total of 295 runs in their first innings, trailing the hosts by 24 runs. They showcased strong batting performance once again in the third innings, scoring 342 runs, setting a challenging target of 319 for the opposition. The Indian bowlers then delivered an exceptional performance, dismissing the hosts for 223 runs, resulting in a memorable victory by a margin of 95 runs.
