Ajit Agarkar was renowned for his formidable pace and impressive wicket-taking abilities. However, it was his extraordinary batting performance that stole the show during the 1st Test of the 2002 series between India and England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Agarkar, who had faced trolls for his seven consecutive ducks in Australia, made a remarkable comeback by scoring a memorable century against England.
In the first Test match, Nasser Hussain’s England won the toss and batted first to post a daunting total of 487 runs in their first innings. In response, Sourav Ganguly’s Indian team could only muster a paltry score of 221 runs in 81.5 overs. England declared their second innings at 301 for 6, setting a mammoth target of 568 runs for India to chase. Although Rahul Dravid scored 63 runs, and VVS Laxman put up a gritty 74 runs in India’s second innings, the team was still facing an imminent defeat at Lord’s.
Ajit Agarkar went on to achieve a sublime 109* against England at Lord’s, securing his maiden century in the longest format of the game. In 2002, he became the 7th Indian batsman to accomplish this feat at the iconic venue.

Unfortunately, despite Agarkar’s impressive performance, India’s tailenders failed to provide the required support to the in-form batsman. In the end, India’s innings came to a close at 397, with Agarkar remaining unbeaten on 109. Despite his remarkable efforts, the rest of the Indian team fell short, and they eventually suffered a 170-run defeat in the opening game of the series led by Sourav Ganguly.
