Cricket Viral Video: Andrew Symonds received eight runs off one ball delivered by Iain O’Brien during a Test match against New Zealand at the Gabba in 2008–2009. After Ricky Ponting decided to bat in Brisbane, Australia was 124-4 in the 46th over. Symonds dodged as O’Brien bounced to start the 46th over.

O’Brien again bowled short, and Symonds pulled this time before being dropped by Aaron Redmond at mid-wicket. O’Brien reacted, as any fast bowler would, with another short-pitched delivery, this time outside off-stump. Although Symonds pulled violently, the ball slowed down on the massive terrain. Symonds and Michael Clarke had already ran three before Redmond could field the ball. Now they chose to choose “one for the toss.”

Brendon McCullum, the wicketkeeper for New Zealand, went after the throw and caught it. After gathering the ball, turning around, and throwing it, he saw that Symonds had already gained ground and, worse than, that no one had offered to back up. The ball sped up and hit the barrier.

Rudi Koertzen improvised by raising eight fingers to indicate the additional runs that would be added to Symonds’ and Australia’s totals. This was two runs above the amount that is frequently referred to as the “maximum” in cricket commentary, and even one run above the amount that India scored against Bangladesh at Chattogram during a penalty-run incident. O’Brien, though, had the last laugh as Andrew was dismissed just one to balls later after McCullum took his catch at the edge.
