Cricket Viral Video: Cricket might be a gentlemen’s game but the people running it are far from being gentlemen. They are ruled by greed and in 1992, greed took over the game entirely and made the game of cricket a laughing stock.
In just 12 minutes, an ICC World Cup Semi-Final became the biggest scam the World Cricket has ever seen. And all of it was just because of the greed. Just to earn a little more, the management sold the cricket to the biggest buyers and gave fans a joke of a tournament.
The cricket viral video features the ICC World Cup 1992 Semi Final between South Africa and England. Let’s not call it a match, because this is the day when cricket died.
A Truly Monumental Return
South Africa had to climb mountains and rocks to qualify for the world cup. Their 22-year-long exile from cricket got over in 1991 only. The exile was because of the Apartheid Laws that were prevalent in Africa at the time.
Nelson Mandela urged ICC to let Africa take part in the World Cup. And the Council agreed, but with the condition that the referendum should be positive. Refrendumm of the Apartheid Laws as they were not completely repelled completely.
So, South Africa could be sent back from the tournament if the referendum did not succeed. Any match could have been the last match for these players depending on the result of the referendum. It was truly a bizarre time for cricket.
Cricket Viral Video: Darkest Day Of Cricket
Against all odds, South Africa reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. And as the referendum turned out positive, they were allowed to play the semi-finals. It was like a fairy tale where these 16 players would bring home the World Cup for the inauguration of a new South Africa.
But, fate had something else in the plan. This World Cup was famous for two dumb rules that ruined half of the matches. A Rain Rule and Timing Rule. Timing rule where a TV channel will completely decide the timing of the matches.
It was all because of the money that Australia was earning. England’s inning ended in just 45 overs because of the time limit. And when the match was getting good rain started pouring.
Greed Took Over
The rain rule was applied and two least reductive overs of English inning were removed. And now, South Africa had to chase 22 runs in just 1 ball. And like a joke the broadcasters even published that wrong.
The broadcasters wanted the match to finish on that day by 10:10 PM only. And because of that, a target of 22 runs in 13 balls was reduced to just 22 runs in 1 ball.
African batsmen went onto the crease. Even Gooch was arguing with the umpires over the stupid rule. England won the match and the deadline was met, but cricket died that night and might have not recovered even now.
